Ecce homo!
Lots of types of dudes live in the universe of Wheelbreaker. While they're largely derived from standard fantasy races they are an intentional departure from genre convention.
Some races, like humans, dragons, kobolds, and the fae are going to be pretty recognizable while races like elves, orks, and dwarves are quite different from typical depictions. The Volagog and the Forgeborne are (probably) unique to the setting.
Most disks are cosmopolitan and have folks of all sorts of species living on them, although the climactic needs of the various species will result in larger populations of those species concentrated in places where the climate is more comfortable to them. In nimbus cities this sort of climate-based separation is not a huge issue as the climates in nimbus cities are artificial in nature and can be changed as needed for whatever population lives there, down to a room-by-room basis.
Unlike other fantasy settings, the species of wheelbreaker aren't able to interbreed, even species such as elves and dwarves, who are descendent from orks and kobolds respectively, are not able to interbreed with the species they are descended from. This is because the species in wheelbreaker are aliens with entirely separate trees of life or have, by virtue of time and separation, changed enough to become a new species. There are no racial restrictions on becoming part of a forgeborne though and it is relatively common for forgeborn to be made up of folks from several different species and cultures.
A birds-eye view of the various species is as follows:
Orks Large bug people with 4 arms. | Dwarves Short and stocky frog(?) people that like to live in caves if they can. |
Dragons Dragons. | Volagog A colony of tiny ocean critters all living together with built-in wifi. |
Humans This one is you. (if this is not you that means something really exciting has happened!) | Fae IDK I haven't written much lore about them. Make something up in the mean time I guess. They live in and are native to the realms of magic. |
Elves Tall bug people with fungus growing out of them who have a hive mind. | Forgeborne what if you poured molten souls into a new body? |
Kobolds Short little lizard dudes. | Goblinoids What a dreamer might imagine a person to be if they had never gotten a clear look. And also they're little guys. |
